Judging from sales figures, Red Alert 2 is now more popular than God. Any worries about how the game might suffer from the "more of the same" blahs have been erased quickly in a...ahem...blizzard of retail purchases. But in case the "more of the same" label was still stuck on Red Alert 2, a great new multiplayer mod called DeeZire has emerged to mix up the gameplay you all know and love. Adding tons of new weapons, vehicles, maps, and play modes, DeeZire is dee-crap.
The mod makes both minor tweaks and major changes to nearly every unit, building, and country by incorporating elements from the original Red Alert and Tiberian Sun (as well as some all-new bits).
There's a variety of unit additions, with old/new units and vehicles such as mine layers, stealth bombers, medics, flamers, Antonov Cargo Planes for the Soviets, and several new tanks for each side.
The most important change is how the mod more clearly delineates the differences between each country. In regular Red Alert 2, each country has access to only one exclusive unit. But in DeeZire, each country has a clear specialty and units tend to be rebalanced to support this specialty. For example, the British formerly had access to only a sniper as their specialized unit; now the British are experts at espionage, producing veteran snipers, rocketeers, and engineers, and getting exclusive access to a Phase Tank that can disguise itself as any terrain object.
The net effect is to balance Red Alert 2 more closely than even Westwood was able to, while simultaneously adding more variety and new strategic elements. DeeZire also lets you crank the resolution all the way up to 1280x1024, which results in the sweetest looking RA2 you've ever seen. The new graphics for the new units get especially gorgeous treatment in the higher-res mode.
DeeZire adds a whole new dimension to Red Alert2, elevating the source game considerably. Our hats are off to it!
